[bottom, that is] // it's an insane undertaking to paint a straight line on white polish. trust me [unless your a nail pro] // thus, this bit of nail art falls into the "advanced" category for you DIY-ers out there // give yourself plenty of time + a glass of wine :)

sometimes it's just a menswear day. i dig androgyny. i mean, let me re-phrase that. i dig androgyny as it pertains to tuxedo tops, drop crotch pants, blazers, and the like. ~~probably~~ definitely not in the "beauty" department though. i've been stuck on my cat liner [see photo #2] for as long as i can remember [tutorial here]. plus, when it comes to hair -- bigger is better [obviously]. this is my ode-to-mufasa do, topped off with fly-aways galore! heh.

totally listening to whitney houston's "i wanna dance with somebody" while typing this. the epitome of adorable in that music video. for realz. the 80s frizzed-out hair, electric eye makeup... not to mention those outfits! what a sad loss for the music community...

i wasn't planning on paying homage to the 80s today [promise]. the acid washed jeans just happened organically! ;) and yes, yes i'm once again wearing my default leather jacket. if you knew how bloody cold it was here, you'd understand why i simply cannot take it off for the sake of a photo. [insert shivers here]

sooooo apparently CNN is now covering the nail art craze that's been sweeping the nation. this is news in the making, one coat of polish at a time [lol]. you'll never catch me with talons, gems, or rhinestones though. i prefer my nail art to be minimalistic and practical.

still obsessed with color blocked nails here...

for you nails enthusiasts out there -> i'm going to let you in on my new secret weapon: the miraculous drip dry! after your final coat + top coat, add 1-2 drops of drip dry to each nail. your nails will be dry within 5 minutes! i was a skeptic at first, but this stuff is legit. get it!

this was my attire for a "birth-month" coffee date w/my dear friend bretton. then ross treated me to dinner/vino at a local wine bar, along with sweet treats and a movie! i love my husband! did i mention he made my favorite breakfast yesterday morning too??

last night i had the brilliant idea to create some "valentine's day nails". i sketched out a few designs which included hearts, glitter, and the like -- only to come to the realization that i'm the most anti-mushy/gushy hallmark holiday person i know. not that there's anything wrong with celebrating valentine's day, but i've just never gotten into the hype! honestly, i think love is truly beautiful when communicated in the unplanned/unexpected moments. okay, i'll hop off my soap box before i get on a roll... :)

so here's my non-traditional valentine's day nail art. "OPI on collin's ave" + "baby it's coal outside"... with a very blair-esque geometric flare! for these rectangle nails i painted the red center first and then then the black overtop to create the geometric definition! have fun lovers!

DIY metal hair ring.

i first came across metal hair bands (or metal hair rings) on pinterest. i was instantly obsessed and began searching online for a place to purchase them... but with no luck! :( they were originally spotted on the runway at dries van noten fw2011 and h&m was (or is) carrying a similar metal hair accessory.

but with the nearest h&m being 3 hours away, i made due by hitting up my local hardware store! genius. only $1.78 per piece too! to secure the ring, wrap hair with a thick ponytail holder (or several) to fill the opening, backcomb your ends and ta-da! a minimalist metal hair band.

omg, color blocking is everywhere! since i love it and it's become impossible to ignore -- i've incorporated it into my nail art for today!

essie "mint candy apple"/"nice is nice"/"tart deco"

directions:
paint base polish on 1/3 of the nail. the with the second polish paint horizontally at the 1/3 mark to create a defined line. continue to paint to the 2/3 mark. the with the third color paint horizontally at the 2/3 mark and continue to the tip.

allow colors to sit for about 5 minutes then apply a top coat... and ta-da... color block nails!

merry [belated] christmas lovelies! as you can tell, i took some time off from blogging. there were just too many other activities fighting for my attention -- like this ugly christmas sweater party hosted by my mom!

ross and i hit-up a few thrift shops before we settled on our "ugly" outfit gems. mine is a polyester 90s blazer [double my size] with shoulder pads fit for a professional football player! ross opted for a panda sweatshirt [which he think is a "christmas" panda], topped with a flannel vest, and suspenders. sexy.

our 1st christmas [as old married folk] was a blast! how was yours??

i thought about doing "festive nails" for christmas -- totally didn't stick to that plan! what i ended up with were these geometric nails. the original plan was to create squares on each nail, but i found it to be quite difficult to freehand. so instead i painted a different geometric shape on every nail to give it some variety!!

this week has been totally "cray-cray" [as my sis-in-law calls it]. this week, the company i work for has hosted a charity fashion event for a local children's hospital [which we raised $25,000 for the kids!]. instead of modeling this year, i ended up shooting video & photos of all the backstage action. it was honestly kind of nice to be behind-the-scenes this time!! [back to modeling next year though...]

the inspiration was "fashion around the world" so each model mirrored a particular culture [hence the drastically different hair & makeup].

instead of a guest book, we used a polaroid camera to photograph our guests. they then could personalize their photo and hang it on the frame attached to the barn.

our caterer was incredible! if you live in michigan and are planning a wedding, message me. she made organic mini cupcakes, fruit parfaits served in champagne flutes, cannolis dipped in heath brittle, and the list goes on!

i know i'm partially biased, but our wedding day was perfection. even the "hiccups" were overshadowed by the joy and happiness of gathering with our dearest friends and family. it's hard to fathom that 3 months have already passed! you blink and then suddenly real life resumes and you're left to wonder, "was that a dream?" best dream i've ever had...

we were so blessed to have such a supportive crew of creative friends and family who helped us plan our day in only 3 months! "why the rush?" you might ask. well, "why not?!" ross and i have actually known each other for almost 6 years now and we didn't find it necessary to postpone getting hitched! engaged on memorial weekend, married on labor day weekend. it can be done!

a majority of our wedding details were comprised of DIY projects. from the homemade dance floor, to the altar, to the place settings -- we wanted our day to represent us. organic, laid-back, with a touch of sophistication. personalizing our wedding also brought our families together. it allowed for us to bond creatively and to learn little tidbits about each other. all-in-all what was most important was sharing our wedding day with the people we love the most. and for that we are truly blessed.

recently there's been a great deal of chatter regarding "how to wear _____ x amount of ways". back a couple months ago it was "25 ways to wear a scarf", now it's "maximizing the maxi skirt" - thus, i've created my own version called "6 ways to look ridiculous with your faux fur collar". heh. but in all seriousness, check out the links above for some variation inspiration!

how to :: "cat-eyes"

for as long as i can remember, i've sported a fairly dramatic eye. but lately i've received several requests for my signature "cat-eye" look [meow]. i love this look because it draws your eyes outward, giving the illusion of larger peepers!!

[fyi] this is my basic look. feel free to add intensity depending upon your look/preference. sometimes i also add mascara to the bottom lash-line [which is not shown in this tutorial]... here we go!!

with a large fluffy brush, sweep the lightest shadow along your brow bone. with the same brush, run the #2 shadow over your entire lid. with an angled brush, create a sideways "V" shape along your natural crease-line. blend and intensify as desired.

[note] depending upon your eye shape, you might have to create a "faux" crease-line. my eyes are deep-set, making it easier to define. if you don't have a well-defined crease, just be sure to blend well between your lightest and darkest shades.

dip a q-tip in eye makeup remover. run the q-tip beneath the eye [to cleanup any shadow fallout] and sweep up past the eye to create the "winged" effect. use a dry q-tip to clean off the area afterwards.

next, run your liner along the shadow line [or go without liner... sometimes i don't even bother!]. keep your liner on an angle as to create the smoothest line possible.

add mascara... and voila!

apparently i am a "newlywed nester" [news to me]. one of my coworkers accused me of nesting due to my recent obsession with nail art, blogging, and the like. nah. i'm an INTROVERT, people! like i've said before, i'm finding blogging to be quite therapeutic. i'd much rather be crafting/creating away than out being the "life of the party"... [however, i can put on my "party hat" when necessary]

it does help that ross is a kindred nerd/introvert/artistically-handsome-devil-of-a-man... so then we can be these "newlywed nesters" together!!! cheer to that! :)

i rarely shop at target.

unless it's for home essentials, you'll hardly ever find me darkening their doors. why? no clue.

this week i was in desperate need of scissors, so i went to target. now instead of walking out with just scissors, i found this cuuuute fur cap too! [and maybe a pair of feather earrings. maybe.]

i am now a target fan.

so the moral of the story is: target is your friend. target has cute accessories for cheap. target has EVERYTHING. haha. but seriously... [and sorry to those of you who don't live near a target]

prior to our wedding i had contemplated a few drastic hair changes: shaving half of my head or dip-dyed tips. ross put the kabosh on shaving my head [understandably so...] & my stylist-friends said "eh no" to the tips [since my ends are fried anyways]

sooo... imagine my elation when i found kevin murphy's color.bug! temporary ombre/dip-dyed color!! color.bug comes in pink, orange, and purple for $20 USD. read on for my review...

color.bug was easy to use.

first: prep the hair with hairspray. it'll help the color stay put.

second: open the container, press against the hair while holding the backside with your other hand. slide product along hair shaft [warning: this will get all over you hands. i'd suggest using gloves]

third: set with hairspray & GO!

this is a one-day wear [unless you want it all over your pillowcases]. i would suggest wearing a darker shirt as this will transfer somewhat onto your clothes. but no worries, it'll come out in the wash!

i was completely inspired this weekend by syandsam on chictopia. their article [click here to read] demonstrates how to make your own faux fur stole [for all you DIYers!!!].

me, on the other hand. i'm much too impatient [or ADD]. i'll have brilliant DIY ideas... but it stops there. lol! if only i could get someone else to create for me... :)

my faux fur stole actually came from another jacket. i ended up removing the collar from one of my old UO coats... now I can actually put this color on any coat OR wear it on it's own! in these photos it's attached with safety pins beneath the collar. easy peasy!!

asylums & DIY halloween nails.

i've never really been into halloween.

you'll never find me at a haunted house or watching a horror film. nope, never. i'm a scaredy cat!!!

it seems though in keeping with the spirit of halloween that i would have a photo shoot in an old asylum... the week before halloween. eek! the photo above is the asylum, built back in the late 1800s, complete with vacant/rundown patient rooms, and old tunnels running beneath the grounds. the perfect location for a alfred hitchcock film!!! spooooky...

nail art:

i originally tried the "splatter" effect by blowing colored polish through a straw onto white nails. yep, EPIC fail. i decided instead to do a "backstroke" halloween nail.

paint nails a matte base color

take a darker color, press firmly at the tip of the nail, then quickly brush backwards while lifting the brush off the nail

[i thought about doing red, but didn't want it to look like blood. yep, i'd get queasy]

paint a top coat... and voila!

just got back tonight from a two-day photo shoot in northern michigan. the hubby [he hates it when i call him that... but i love it] treated me to take-out at one of my favorite restaurants. nothing like tomato bisque and a fancy grilled cheese on a chilly autumn evening! mmm...

i finally decided to post our "renegade" engagement photos from this summer. we took these on a whim with our photographer/friend kelbert [click here for his official website]... his work is very organic & raw [as it should be considering he only shoots film]. these photos are all unedited [true to kelbert's style] and were shot at ross' parents farm [the "eventual" backdrop of our september wedding] -- enjoy lovelies!

heading up north today!

whenever i travel [planes, trains, cars] i HAVE to be comfortable. i'm not the typical american wearing sweatpants and a northface jacket [not slamming those who do but...] -- my traveling attire always has to be practical, yet chic.

i don't know if you've noticed, but you won't find me in a ton of pants. i prefer shorts/skirts over pants any day. here's why -- note the tucked-in-socks look. my lifelong dilemma has been finding pants/jeans long enough for my 5'10" frame. it's tricky! i wanted a pair of colored denim so badly -- i bought these even though they're awkwardly short on me. definitely not vertically challenged here!!!

the hubby was gone most of this weekend working out of state [boooo]. he got back early [4am to be exact] this morning. once again we whipped up our sunday morning "cinnamon-french-toast-w/peanut-butter-and-blueberry-syrup" brunch! for some reason i only have a sweet tooth in the morning. the rest of the day it's SALT! mmm.

the reverse french manicure from yesterday works perfectly with this outfit. still a little matchy-matchy [i think i have a complex about being too matchy-matchy or something], but eh, i'm okay with it!

okay, so honestly... i wasn't sure about leather shorts for autumn. i knew i liked them on other people, but didn't want to cross the classy/trashy divide. now that i've bought them, i'm hooked! they go with everything and can be dressed up or down! so get some meow! ;) heh.

after trying [and succeeding] at ombre nails -- i figured i ought to step up my game with a reverse french manicure!

so i'll shoot straight -- this is not for the faint-of-heart. probably my trickiest nail-feat yet [you nail techs out there, don't look too closely]!

directions:

trim, buff, & file down your nails

1 coat bond aid

1 coat base coat

pop some stovetop popcorn w/salt & pepper for a "post-nail-art job-well-done" snack. trust me, you'll be hungry after this!

paint lighter color in a triangular shape [this doesn't have to be perfect since you'll be painting over it anyways]

paint darker color over triangle to smooth out lines and fill in the rest of the nail [a fine-point brush makes this step a bit easier]

add top coat

munch on popcorn

bask in the glory of your reverse french mani!

this is what happens after an 11hr workday

+ the music venue below playing god-awful screamo

+ being revved up on caffeine

ombre nails.

saw this on refinery29 and had to give it a whirl/swirl (sorry, i couldn't help myself... caffeine + long day, remember?)

(scroll down for my secret tips/tricks)

supplies:

bond aid (if possible)

base coat (if possible)

2 contrasting polishes

top coat

directions:

1 coat bond aid

1 coat base coat

then...

start by painting the darker base color halfway up the nail. be generous with your polish as you'll need enough "swirl" material. switch polishes and paint the tips with the lighter coat. leave a small section between the dark and light colors. once you're finished with the lighter tips, begin "swirling" in the middle!!!

** note: be sure to wipe off the brush of your lighter polish between each finger to avoid mixing the darker color in your polish bottle.

continue onto each finger by repeating the steps above. once nails are completely dry, finish with a top coat! and voila!! ombre nails!!!

artprize is officially underway so we've been scoping out the exhibits almost every day! if you're not familiar - artprize is basically a HUGE outdoor/indoor 3-week art competition in downtown grand rapids. the whole city is oozing crazy eclectic art around every corner, from artist all around the world. so lately we've been grabbing a cup of joe from madcap and perusing the sites! (and the people watching is quite entertaining too. oh those grand rapidians!)

Today was the day. The long awaited bridal shower. if i didn't have to be "professional" i would totally do this. or maybe i will after the wedding... hmm...
